Mt. Vernon Grrls!
Last November we kicked off a successful Indiegogo campaign, to launch our mobile programs and to follow-up on the story of five migrant youth. In 2011 Ana, Cilviana, Teresa, Martha and Lucia traveled to Seattle for RG’s Lights, Camera, Reel Grrls! program, where they produced their first film, “Who We Are,” which screened at the Young People Film Festival in Portland, Oregon that same year. Thanks to generous funders we were able to raise money to return to Mount Vernon to create a documentary on these young women as they are about to graduate high school.
Thanks to the planning of Janice Blackmore, who works in the Mt. Vernon school district supporting migrant youth, and Jill Freidberg an award winning Seattle based documentary filmmaker we started the project in early May. Janice, Jill, along with staff member Doro Leesing, and mentor Angie Bernardoni headed north and ran a refresher with the Grrls, and will be shooting and editing in June. We are excited to be able to share the final product with you, and will keep you posted!
