GRRL in the World: Summer Matthews

Recently we heard from Summer Matthews who was part of our Apprenticeship program in the summer of 2011, and worked on media justice and activism projects Internet Freedom: Money = Access, Internet Freedom: Local Opportunities, and Mobile Justice: A Mobile Revolution. We are thrilled to see she is continuing to pursue film and media justice! Check our her email update, and her latest work: Won’t Hold us Back!

“I am about to start my junior year at Santa Fe University of Art and Design in New Mexico under the Robert Redford/Milagro Initiative Scholarship. I produced and AD the project “Won’t Hold Us Back” this spring with a handful of female film students who were tired of never being asked or considered to be on sets with our boy classmates. We made this piece to promote ourselves, feel like badasses, and hopefully begin to get our voices heard. It was Reel Grrls who first installed my love for filmmaking and fueled my drive to share my story. Reel Grrls is the reason I made it to film school and they forever inspired me to make a difference with my work. Keep doing the good work! Love you Grrrrrrlsss!” – Summer
