Plural Plus: The Future of Film is Feminist Awards
For the third year in a row, Reel Grrls is thrilled to be part of a global network of media organizations to take part in youth voice through PLURAL + a joint initiative between the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the International Organization for Migration, with a network of over 50 partner organizations, who support the creative efforts of young people and distribute their videos worldwide.
Reel Grrls’ Grrl Active Members Lila Shroff and Annie Poole were this year’s Plural Plus panel who selected this year’s awards: The Future of Film is Feminist Awards, with a tie between two films: Hope and Refugee. Both films were excellent in both quality and content. In addition, they each demonstrated themes of feminism as well as focusing on the contest’s themes of xenophobia, migration, diversity and social inclusion.
Hope, told the heartwarming story of a young girl and her mother navigating life in war-torn Syria. Although their surroundings were grim, the film focused on aspirations for the future, and the lead, a young girl that has the power to change the world.
Refugee, a short film from Turkey, showed a woman and young girl looking back at snapshots of their past. Although themes of xenophobia and migration were heavily prevalent in this video, the film was awarded the Future is Feminist award because the final shot of the film showed the woman, with a look of determination in her eye. Despite the unfortunate circumstances of her current situation, from our interpretation, she is ready to use her strength to take a step forward.
In addition, both videos let girls see how life is different for women all across the world, and they empower them to make a difference. Also, we would like to give an honorable mention to the film Aibek, which explored the hard situations that those in the LGBTQ+ community in Kazakhstan face daily. Each video we watched, from all over the world, told eye-opening stories and pushed us to see beyond our own community.
