Safe Routes to School Film Challenge

October 2018 – April 2019

LEARN. RECORD. PRODUCE YOUR OWN CLIENT VIDEO!

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is inviting City of Seattle youth to show their creativity by participating in a video challenge to shed some light on Vision Zero and Safe Routes to School.

We are partnering with SDOT to work with high school students to learn about the Safe Routes to School Program and Vision Zero. Students will be able to produce videos and share their messages to encourage walking and biking to school as well as change behavior and support Seattle’s Vision Zero goal of ending traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2030.

As part of the Safe Routes to School 5-year Action Plan, SDOT envisions a city where safe streets and vibrant neighborhoods combine to build community, support sustainability, and make the healthy choice the easy choice for families and neighbors. Each of us plays a role in reaching Vision Zero and making Seattle’s streets safer for everyone – whether we are driving, walking, or biking.

In Seattle, we’ve seen distracted driving on the rise – a 300% increase (from 2011 to 2014) – contributing to 3,000 of the 10,000 crashes per year on city streets. Statewide, fatalities from distracted driving increased 32% from 2014 to 2015. These crashes are preventable. It’s no accident to be texting your friend, scrolling through your social media feeds, or finding that perfect song. These are all choices that could change someone’s life forever.

Select schools have been chosen to participate in an in-depth video production program; however, students in the City of Seattle are still encouraged to participate through the 48-Hour Film Challenge!

Submission Deadline: April 30, 2019 by midnight PST. The contest is open to all high school students enrolled in the City of Seattle.
